The Bandits Get Fired Up in Escondido Tournament Play
by Staff Writer

December 13, 2003-The Bandits arrived at Jesmond Dene Park in Escondido at 7:00am
to find a field frozen by a cold and frosty night.  After a round of warm-up drills it was
obvious the Bandits had come focused and prepared to play baseball against two of the
hottest teams in all Southern California.

The Bandits started the first game against their arch-rival Reds from Encinitas.  With solid
defense, great pitching, and explosive bats, the Bandits were ahead after one inning, by a
score of 3-0.  The score see-sawed back and forth as both teams managed to score one
or two runs each inning.   After giving up five runs in the third inning, the Bandits found
themselves playing catch up.  With the go-ahead run for the Reds standing on third base it
appeared that the Reds might win with a come from behind victory. Two seconds later
the runner was tagged out to end the threat and the Bandits came up to bat in the bottom
of the last inning.  The Bandits quickly ended the game with a run scored on a passed ball
making the final score Bandits 9, Reds 8.

The second game featured the Bandits against the league leading Torres from La Jolla.
Again, the Bandits came out with hot bats and a lead from the first inning.  Great
defensive play, more outstanding pitching, and unbelievably hot bats sustained the Bandits
lead throughout the entire game.  Leading by six runs going into the last inning, the Bandits
thought they would skate to an easy win.  The Torres had other ideas.  After scoring five
runs and putting the tying run on third base, the Torres appeared poised for one of the
season’s most dramatic come from behind victories.  But with one final burst of great
pitching by the Bandits the last batter was called out on strikes and the game was over,
Bandits 8, Torres 7.

The day’s play featured highlights from every player on the team:
Evan pitched effectively in both games and hit well.
Brandon had three hits including a double and triple which he stretched into an inside the
park home run.
Nicholas was unhittable in the second game and hit well in both games.
Niko hit a rope down the third base line in the second game to score two key runs.
AJ had key RBI hits in both games and scored a very important run in the second game.
Derek hit the ball well and stole important bases.
Kevin made important defensive plays and hit the ball well.
JP was hot at the plate and unhittable on the mound in the first inning.
Nick Anderson fielded well and hit the ball extremely hard to get on base.
Danny played heads up ball - getting hits in both games, playing great defense, and
pitching well.
Christian hit a rope to the left center field fence.
Bryan caught the entire day and shot down three base runners in the first game.

With these two victories, the Bandits win their Pool and advance to the tournament semi-
finals on Sunday at 2:15. Go Bandits !!!
