Bandits Win Fallbrook Memorial Day Tournament
By Staff Writer
05/30/2005-The La Costa Bandits traveled to Fallbrook, CA for the annual Memorial Day
Classic tournament over the long three-day weekend. The weekend of baseball started out in
style with an early Saturday morning game against the North City All Stars. The Bandit boys
were visitors for the game and came out swinging in true Bash Brothers style with 2 runs in
the top of the first inning, and NINE more runs in the 2nd inning. With great pitching by
Danny, Bryan, and Niko and good solid defense, the North City team was held to just two runs.
The game was called on account of mercy after just four innings.
Final score, Bandits 14, North City 2.
The La Costa Bandits returned to play another early morning game on Sunday and the Bandit
bats were hot again. The Bandits jumped out early with 4 runs in the first inning. With solid
defense, great pitching by Niko and extremely solid hitting, the Bandits sailed on to an easy
victory in another mercy-called game.
Final score, Bandits 21, Fallbrook 5.
The Bandits returned on Sunday afternoon for their final pool play game against San Marcos.
The Bandits started with AJ on the mound and AJ was on fire. Throwing heat from the first
pitch, AJ threw a near perfect game giving up just 3 runs. The Bandits bats were also on fire,
with hits coming from everyone in the order. This game also ended by mercy.
Final score, Bandits 17, San Marcos 3.
La Costa Bandits # 1 Seed
With three big victories under their belts, the Bandits were selected as the tournament’s top seed
in the semi-final game. This semi-final game featured the Bandits against the Heat from
Fallbrook. The Bandits came in to the bottom of the first inning and scored 14 runs in a display
of exceptionally strong and powerful hitting. After the first inning it appeared that this game
would be put of reach and the Bandits would sail into the finals game with ease. The boys from
Fallbrook had other ideas…chipping away at the lead with 2 or 3 runs per inning the Fallbrook
team was able to make the game very interesting. The Bandits had great difficulty finding a
pitcher that could hit the umpire’s unusually small strike zone. A total of seven different
pitchers were used in the longest game ever in the history of Bandit baseball. Eventually, it was
"Trevor Time" as Trevor Jones came in to pitch the sixth inning and shut down the Fallbrook
bats, striking out the last batter of the game. The Bandits won with a final score of 16-9 in a
game that lasted 2 hours and 52 minutes.
With the Fallbrook heat and sun beating down, the Bandit boys were finally able to take the field
for the Championship Game against the North City All Stars. Nick Shirreffs was called upon to
pitch in this game. After a shaky start, Nicholas quickly adjusted to the unusually flat mound.
The North City All Stars capitalized on the opportunity put three quick runs on the board in the
top of the first inning.
The Bandits came in and were shut down with no runs in the bottom of the first. The second
inning featured no runs by either team. The North City All Stars appeared ready to strike big
again in the 3rd inning but a runner was caught off guard at 3rd base. A pickle ensued and an
overthrow to 3rd base was quickly cut off by AJ in left field. AJ came up throwing to home
plate and the runner was tagged out by Nick Anderson for the third out of the inning. This play
fired up the Bandits. Trevor started the Bandit hitting with a base hit in the bottom of the 3rd
and the Bandits quickly piled on. Two home runs (1 by Brandon and 1 by Nick Shirreffs)
added to the production of six quick runs. Nick returned to the mound with more great pitching
and was eventually relieved with near perfect relief work by Danny.
Final score, Bandits 9, North City 6.
